K12 CAVA San Mateo Overview

K12 (CAVA: California Virtual Academy, San Mateo)

- Government/State Funded Online School where the parent is the Learning Coach.
- They send you a computer, printer, keyboard, headphones, all books (except Math & Science Textbooks), student guides, learning coach guides, science kit, art supplies, math manipulatives.
- Child has homeroom teacher, Math teacher, LA teacher, and 5th+ has Science teacher. Teachers are very good and very helpful. You can contact the teacher to set up an online tutoring session for your child whenever he needs help.
- Child meets with homeroom teacher once a quarter at the library and submits samples in each subject, teacher quizzes the child in the basic skills (Math, LA).
- Child is required to do 20 minutes of PE a day minimum (or 100 minutes a week), and email a PE log every month.
- Online classes mostly in the morning spaced out over the week: Mondays is homeroom class with homeroom teacher. Elementary has Math once a week and LA once a week. 4th also has Composition. 5th also has Science. 6th+ has Math daily, LA 2 times a week, and History once a week. (High school I do not know about but I heard they have online class and teacher for each subject, it's like a real high school but online).
- Parent must log attendance daily, the minimum is 4 hours. Parent has an account where they can log attendance, monitor all their students schedules and see the scores of the assessments and can see the progress. Also have K-mail, where you can email the teachers and you can check for emails from the teachers. There is a weekly newsletter.
- Daily & Weekly Schedule: The child logs in and can see their daily schedule and weekly schedule. It will tell them all the lessons they need to do that day and if they have an online class.
- Online work: Math and science are almost fully online. Vocabulary is mostly online. History has both online and offline work. They also require Study Island (site with quizzes in a fun way) starting in 5th grade.
- Offline work: math practice, spelling, literature, composition, history, grammar - but you still have to go online and check off the lessons, and take some lesson assessments and unit assessments online) Science assessments are offline.
- Teacher graded assignments: Literature essay and Math lesson to be submitted to the teacher by email each semester to be graded by the teacher. Middle school has several essays required throughout the year.
- Testing: there is an assessment test at the beginning of the year and the end of the year, and state testing in the spring.
- Tests in subjects: in elementary, about every other lesson has an assessment quiz, about 5-10 questions to check if the child understood the lesson. You have to get 80% to pass and for the lesson to be marked complete. At the end of the Unit, there is a Unit assessment that is longer and harder. In the middle of the year, there are semester assessments that are also long. In the end of the year, there are end of year assessments. However I am not sure if these semester assessments affect the child's grade.
- Progress: Kids can see their % progress in each subject and projected end date.
- Report Card: In the middle of the year and at the end of the year, elementary get 'below expectations' or 'meets expectations' or 'exceeds expectations'. You have to have 7.5% progress a month to meet expectations.
- Fieldtrips: They arrange field trips every month. Some are free, some have a discount rate. Some are close, some are far. Some are for younger kids, some are for older kids, and some for all ages. And there's usually a park day at the beginning of the year and one at the end of the year.
- Parent support: they have online workshops every week on scheduling, teaching writing, behavior, etc. (that I wish I had time to watch because I really need to) They even have preschool story time. In the summer they have summer campy fun class online for about one hour a day.
